How to Install PVC Strip Curtains: Rail, Overlap and Checks

To install PVC strip curtains, first confirm the mounting system and finished opening, fix a level rail to a suitable structural surface, hang the strips in the specified overlap pattern, and check floor clearance and safe passage. The exact fixing positions, overlap and clearance must come from the instructions for your curtain kit.

Which curtain is this guide for? Conventional overlapping plastic strip curtains with a compatible suspension rail. A magnetic PVC door curtain has a different panel and closing arrangement. Use the installation guides hub to choose the instructions for your actual product. This planning guide does not replace the supplied hardware instructions or a site assessment.

Before installation: identify your kit and doorway

Check whether you received a complete PVC strip curtain kit, pre-cut replacement strips, or roll material requiring fabrication. Replacement strips alone do not establish that an existing rail is compatible. Compare the rail profile, hanger plates, hole pattern, strip width and finished hanging length with the approved order.

  • Opening: measure clear width at the top, middle and bottom, and height at the left, centre and right.
  • Mounting: confirm face fixing above the opening or soffit fixing beneath the lintel. Do not transfer dimensions between these arrangements.
  • Surface: identify the actual structural substrate behind trim or cladding; the visible finish may not support the curtain.
  • Movement: photograph door handles, rollers, tracks and the original door at both ends of its travel.
  • Traffic: record people, carts or vehicles, including loaded dimensions and approach direction.

Use our doorway measuring guide before ordering. For material dimensions, see the PVC strip curtain size, thickness and overlap guide.

Tools and safe preparation

Prepare a tape measure, level, marker, suitable drill and driver, safe access equipment, and the fixings specified for the confirmed substrate. Keep the passage closed to normal traffic during installation. Check for concealed services before drilling. Ask a qualified installer to assess uncertain structural surfaces, high-level work or heavy assemblies. Never drill into glass or rely on decorative trim as a fixing surface.

How to install PVC strip curtains: step by step

1. Confirm finished dimensions and mounting position

Compare the measured opening with the order drawing. For a face-mounted curtain, confirm the coverage beyond the opening and the mounting height; for a soffit-mounted curtain, check the available depth and fixing surface. Do not add an assumed allowance to strips already made to a confirmed finished size.

2. Mark a level rail line

Use a level rather than following a potentially sloping frame. Dry-position the rail and mark the fixing points required by its instructions. Confirm that all points reach a suitable substrate and that the rail does not obstruct the original door, drainage or required access.

3. Secure the rail using its specified fittings

Support the rail while fixing it. Choose anchors for the actual surface and curtain load, not simply the screws that happen to fit the holes. Recheck straightness and level as you tighten. Bracket spacing and tightening requirements differ by system; there is no single spacing or torque suitable for every PVC curtain rail.

4. Lay out strips and hanger plates

Inspect the strips for damage and identify any marked edge strips or special components. If plates need fitting, follow the supplied hole pattern and clamping instructions. Do not invent a new hole spacing or substitute incompatible plates. Protect strips from grit while working.

5. Hang strips in the confirmed overlap pattern

Hook-on systems commonly use alternating rows; bolt-on systems use a different fixing procedure. Follow the layout for the supplied rail rather than copying a hook-count pattern from another brand. Start from the specified edge and check the pattern repeatedly so an early spacing error does not accumulate across the doorway.

6. Check hanging length before making any cut

Let the strips hang freely as directed by the supplier. Check the entire floor profile, not just one side. The strips should not continuously drag, fold or create a trip hazard. Use the approved floor clearance for the application. If cutting is required and permitted, use the supplier’s safe cutting method on a stable work surface; do not trim a suspended strip while people are passing.

7. Test passage and inspect the complete opening

Check coverage with the curtain at rest, then test the approved traffic route in a controlled area. Observe dragging, snagging, visibility and return after passage. Do not introduce forklifts or loaded equipment until the curtain configuration and route have been assessed for them. A strip curtain is not an impact barrier or a replacement for required safety controls.

How much should PVC strips overlap?

Use the overlap specified for the ordered strip width, rail and application. Suppliers may express overlap differently, so a percentage without a diagram is not enough to reproduce a layout. Request a front-view drawing showing strip width, centre-to-centre spacing, row sequence and edge coverage.

Illustrative geometry, not a product recommendation: if two adjacent 200 mm strips have centres 150 mm apart, their geometric overlap is 50 mm. This does not determine the correct rail pattern or how a supplier labels the overlap percentage. Actual sizing must also account for edge coverage and the number of strips.

Greater overlap adds material across the passage and can change passage resistance. It does not correct an uneven rail, unsuitable material grade or missing edge coverage. For cold-room openings, confirm the material’s documented service range separately; do not assume ordinary PVC becomes freezer-suitable because more strips are added.

Common PVC strip curtain installation problems

Problem Check first Next action
Gaps between strips Row sequence, hanger position and specified overlap Compare with the layout before adding strips or drilling new holes.
Strips drag on the floor Rail height, floor slope and finished hanging length Confirm measurements and permitted adjustment before cutting.
Strips catch on handles or tracks Original door travel and curtain mounting offset Stop use and review the layout; extra weight is not a clearance fix.
Rail or fittings move Substrate, anchors and installation instructions Isolate the opening and have the fixing arrangement inspected.
Strips remain displaced Obstructions, distortion, airflow and material suitability Document the movement and conditions; do not apply heat to reshape unknown PVC.

After an adjustment: how to check the result

Do not judge an installation only from a front photograph taken immediately after hanging. Record what happens at rest and during the approved passage test, then compare the same observations after each permitted adjustment.

  1. Record the starting condition. Photograph the whole opening and the affected hanger, strip edges and floor area. Note whether the gap is permanent, appears after passage, or changes when the original door or ventilation is operating normally.
  2. Compare the layout, not just the appearance. Check the supplied strip sequence, hanger positions, edge coverage and finished length against the approved drawing. Do not add extra overlap or cut strips merely to make one photograph look better.
  3. Make only an approved correction. Keep normal traffic out of the work area. Refer loose rails, uncertain anchors or structural movement to a qualified installer. If strips are curled or stiff rather than incorrectly positioned, use the PVC curling and stiffness checks before changing the rail layout.
  4. Repeat the same observations. Check coverage at rest, clearance across the floor profile, interference with the original door and return after controlled passage. Record any remaining snagging, dragging or displacement. Keep an unsafe opening out of normal use until it has been assessed.
  5. Confirm the next action. If a replacement is proposed, complete the replacement strip compatibility checklist first. A matching width alone does not confirm that a strip fits the existing suspension system.

What this check can establish: whether the observed installation issue remains under the recorded conditions. It does not certify airtightness, temperature retention, hygiene performance or suitability for every traffic pattern. Send the before-and-after photos, order reference and unresolved observations when requesting support.

Installation handover checklist

  • Record the curtain type, order reference and approved layout.
  • Confirm that the rail and every strip are securely engaged.
  • Photograph overall coverage, overlap and floor clearance.
  • Check that the original door, locks and required exit remain operational.
  • Record any unresolved snagging, visibility or movement problem before normal use.
  • Agree an inspection schedule based on the actual traffic and environment.

Frequently asked questions

Can I install plastic strip curtains without drilling?

Only if the supplied system has an approved alternative fixing method for the actual load and substrate. Do not replace a mechanically fixed rail with adhesive by assumption.

Can I reuse an old PVC strip curtain rail?

Possibly, after checking its condition, load suitability and compatibility with the replacement hanger plates and strips. Matching strip width alone does not prove compatibility.

Should PVC strip curtains touch the floor?

They should not continuously drag or fold on the floor. Use the clearance specified for the supplied design and application rather than a universal number.

Is this the same as magnetic PVC door curtain installation?

No. Conventional strips use overlap; magnetic panels rely on their specified closing-edge arrangement. The cutting, hanging and alignment instructions are not interchangeable.
