A magnetic screen door for French doors should be chosen around how you use the two door leaves—not just the overall frame width. First decide whether you normally open one leaf or both, identify a suitable stationary mounting area, and check where people need to pass through the screen. Then confirm the finished screen dimensions and closure layout for the proposed product.
A label such as “French door screen” does not prove that a kit fits every double doorway. A lightweight hook-and-loop screen, a reinforced hanging-panel screen and a retractable screen use different structures. Their sizing and installation instructions are not interchangeable.
Can French doors have a magnetic screen?
They can be candidates for a screen when the opening, mounting area and door movement allow a suitable installation. The important question is whether the particular screen can cover the required opening while leaving both doors and their hardware usable.
Some retail products are marketed for French doors, but each has its own size and mounting requirements. For example, Duck Brand’s magnetic screen listing names several door applications while still identifying a particular product size. Treat an application label as a starting point, not a fit guarantee.
Check the following before choosing a screen:
- Which leaf is normally opened, and whether both must remain usable.
- Whether the doors swing towards the proposed screen position.
- Where handles, locks, meeting edges and bolts project.
- Which top and side surfaces are stationary and suitable for the proposed mounting.
- Whether the screen would obstruct normal access or any required exit function.
If those conditions cannot be resolved, consider a different screen arrangement or obtain an installer’s assessment instead of forcing a magnetic kit into the opening.
1. Plan for one-door and two-door use
Describe the actual opening states before sending measurements. The meeting line of the two closed doors is not automatically the most convenient position for a screen’s opening seam.
| How the doors are used | What to document | What the screen layout must address |
|---|---|---|
| One leaf is normally open; the second is usually closed | The usable passage with only the normal leaf open | The screen’s access point should be usable from that passage, without depending on an unsuitable fixing surface |
| Both leaves are regularly opened | The full clear opening and normal approach route | Coverage and access must suit the complete opening, not just one door leaf |
| One leaf is used daily; both are opened for deliveries | Photos and measurements in both states | The proposed arrangement must explain how occasional full-width access will work |
| Handles or meeting-edge hardware project into the opening | Side views and the door’s full travel | Screen material, closure edges and mounting must avoid interference |
These are planning scenarios, not confirmation that every product can provide every layout. An offset passage, multiple panels or removable section should only be assumed available when the supplier confirms the proposed construction.
What if only one door is used most of the time?
Show the supplier that opening state. A screen split placed at the centre of the full pair may not align conveniently with the route through one open leaf. Ask for the passage position to be shown on the proposed layout rather than assuming a centred split is correct.
Do not treat the edge of a movable second leaf as a permanent mounting post. Any attachment to a moving part needs to be explicitly permitted by the product’s design and instructions.
2. Choose the structure before calculating the finished size
Lightweight magnetic mesh kit
Many household kits attach around a frame using hook-and-loop material and have a split magnetic closing edge. They can be a practical option when the kit’s dimensions, fixing surface and opening layout match the doorway. Check the product’s own fitting instructions and permitted attachment method.
Reinforced hanging-panel system
A heavier suspended system uses a supported top mounting arrangement and separate panels. This is a different installation task from applying perimeter adhesive tape. The available headroom, support surface, panel sequence and passage position need review before manufacture.
Harbor Lux’s reinforced hanging-panel construction is described on the current product page. That description is not confirmation that it fits your French doors: the specific opening and mounting arrangement still need assessment.
Retractable or framed screen
If you want the mesh to retract out of view, or need a framed operating system, investigate products specifically designed for that task. A magnetic closing edge does not by itself make a hanging mesh curtain retractable. Do not select from the word “magnetic” without checking how the complete screen operates.
3. Record the opening and mounting area separately
Avoid sending one width × height value without saying what it measures. Record the site dimensions first, then have the supplier identify the finished screen dimensions on a drawing or quotation.
| Record | How to describe it | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Normal clear passage | Width and height with the usual leaf open; state the units | Identifies daily access |
| Full clear opening | Width and height with both leaves in the intended open position | Identifies occasional or regular double-door access |
| Top mounting area | Photograph and measure the available stationary surface and headroom | Helps distinguish a workable fixing area from trim or moving parts |
| Side mounting areas | Show each stationary side, surface condition and obstructions | Supports the proposed perimeter or panel arrangement |
| Door movement | Photos open and closed, plus the swing towards the screen position | Reveals potential collisions or snagging |
| Handles and locks | Side photographs with a ruler where useful | Shows projections that a straight-on photograph can hide |
| Threshold and floor | Show changes in level and any obstructions | Helps the supplier confirm lower coverage and movement |
Where an opening is uneven, record measurements at several positions and label them. Do not choose whichever number seems easiest to order. Supply the complete record and ask which dimensions control the proposed installation.
Do I add extra width and height?
Only according to the chosen screen’s confirmed measuring instructions. Suppliers can distinguish “fits door size” from actual screen size. Magic Screen Door’s product description, for example, states a specific relationship for its own screen. That relationship is not a universal allowance for other kits or for Harbor Lux’s suspended system.
Ask the supplier to state the measurement basis, finished size and required mounting area. Do not add an allowance twice or cut a supplied magnetic edge to correct an unconfirmed size.
4. Check interference in every opening state you need
Before approving the order, review where the proposed screen will sit relative to the existing doors. Confirm that:
- Both leaves can move through their intended travel without catching the screen or its support.
- Handles, latches and bolts remain accessible.
- The screen’s normal passage is reachable with the usual leaf open.
- Occasional full-width access is addressed in the agreed layout.
- The mounting does not depend on unverified trim, glass or moving hardware.
- The existing door can still close and operate normally.
Do not drill, remove door hardware or alter glass to make an uncertain layout work. Obtain a suitable installer’s review when the supporting surface or access conditions are unclear.
Inside versus outside mounting is not a universal rule. An inside position can conflict with an inward-swinging door; an outside position may introduce weather and wind exposure. Compare the actual clearances and exposure with the screen’s permitted installation conditions.
5. Check coverage and closure after installation
Use the supplied drawing and instructions. For Harbor Lux’s suspended construction, see the installation planning and checks; use the original manufacturer’s instructions for a household adhesive kit.
Before normal use, inspect the following safely in each relevant door-opening state:
- Support and attachments: the agreed fixing arrangement is secure, with no peeling, loose fittings or distorted support.
- Door operation: the original doors, handles and locks work without interference.
- Coverage: sides, top, lower edge and closing seams match the agreed layout.
- Passage: people can approach and pass at the planned location without snagging or forceful pulling.
- Return: the screen returns towards its intended closing position after passage, without persistent dragging, twisting or gaps.
Record any mismatch with photographs, a short video and the order reference before modifying the screen. These are practical installation observations, not a laboratory insect-exclusion or wind test.
What a magnetic screen cannot promise
A mesh screen is not a locked exterior door, a child-safety barrier or a secure pet-containment system. Magnetic closure also does not make it universally windproof or insect-proof. Mesh openings, perimeter coverage, door use, wind and material condition all affect the result.
Do not infer scratch resistance, fire classification or a precise mesh composition from a product photograph or the phrase “heavy duty.” Request the specification relevant to the actual order.
Prepare a French-door fit enquiry
Send:
- Measurements for normal single-leaf use and full double-leaf use, with units.
- Full-opening photographs with the doors closed, one open and both open.
- Close-ups of the stationary top and sides, handles, meeting edge and threshold.
- Which side is used most, and whether full-width access is required.
- Proposed installation side, exposure and expected people or pet passage.
- Quantity and destination country/postcode.
Ask the supplier to confirm the construction, fixing position, passage location, finished size and included fittings before production. A product labelled “for double doors” is not a substitute for that confirmation.
Harbor Lux is a trading partner. We can review your opening information against the available reinforced-screen configurations; suitability for a particular French-door arrangement, material and supply scope must be confirmed before ordering. This guide does not confirm a ready-made French-door kit or a universal maximum size.

Frequently asked questions
Can you put a screen door on French doors without a centre post?
Some screen systems are designed around a full double opening, but the absence of a fixed centre post changes the mounting and operating arrangement. Confirm a system intended for that opening; do not assume two separate single-door screens can be joined successfully.
Should I buy one wide magnetic screen or two single screens?
Choose from the required passage and the proposed mounting layout, not width alone. Two single screens need a suitable arrangement at their adjoining edges; one wide screen still needs a practical opening position and sufficient support. Have the complete design confirmed.
Can I use only one French door after fitting the screen?
That should be checked before ordering. Show which leaf is normally used and ask how the screen’s opening will align with that route. Do not assume a centre split across the full pair will suit single-leaf use.
Does a custom size guarantee compatibility?
No. Correct dimensions do not resolve every mounting, swing-clearance, hardware or exposure issue. Approve the configuration as well as the size.
