PVC strip curtains and crash doors can both manage busy commercial or industrial openings, but they solve different traffic and separation problems. The best choice depends on what passes through the opening, how often it moves, how much swing clearance is available and what kind of barrier the site needs.
This guide compares the two structures without assuming universal performance. Final suitability depends on the selected material, hardware, doorway, traffic and operating environment.
Quick comparison
| Decision point | PVC strip curtains | Crash doors |
|---|---|---|
| Basic structure | Multiple flexible PVC strips suspended with overlap | One or two impact-resistant panels mounted on hinges or pivots |
| How traffic passes | Pushes through strips at different points across the opening | Pushes through a defined swinging door panel |
| Return action | Individual strips fall back toward their hanging position | Door panels swing back through their hardware system |
| Barrier continuity | Overlapping flexible strips cover most of the opening | Door panels cover the opening when returned to the closed position |
| Visibility | Available through clear or tinted strips, depending on specification | May rely on vision panels; confirm the selected door design |
| Clearance | No rigid swing arc, but strips need room to move and return | Requires sufficient swing and approach clearance |
| Typical maintenance | Cleaning, alignment checks and replacement of worn strips or hardware | Hinge/pivot, panel, bumper and vision-panel inspection according to the door system |
| Main selection risk | Wrong thickness, width, overlap or material for the traffic and environment | Wrong panel, hardware or impact rating for the traffic and opening |

What is a PVC strip curtain?
A PVC strip curtain uses separate vertical strips hanging from a rail or mounting system. Adjacent strips overlap to create a flexible barrier. People, carts or suitable equipment push through the strips, which then return mainly through gravity, material flexibility and their hanging position.
The configuration is not defined only by the words “PVC curtain.” Buyers should confirm strip width, thickness, overlap, material grade, clear opening size, mounting position, temperature range and traffic pattern. Harbor Lux offers custom PVC strip curtain configurations from one piece after the opening and application are reviewed.
What is a crash door?
A crash door—also called an impact door or traffic door in some markets—normally uses one or two hinged panels that open when traffic pushes against them. The panels then return toward the closed position through the door hardware. Designs vary widely, so the panel material, hinges, bumpers, vision panels, impact suitability and installation frame must be verified for the selected system.
Harbor Lux does not currently present a crash-door product on this site. The comparison is provided to help buyers decide whether a flexible strip system or a hinged traffic-door system better matches the opening before requesting a PVC curtain quote.
Difference 1: where traffic passes
PVC strips can be crossed at different positions across the curtain width. This may suit broad openings where people or equipment do not always follow one exact center line.
A crash door creates a defined passage through one or two hinged panels. Traffic must approach the door so the panel can swing safely and return without striking nearby people, walls, equipment or stored goods.
Difference 2: swing space and opening layout
Strip curtains do not need a rigid door-panel swing arc. They still need adequate height, side clearance and unobstructed space for the strips to move and settle back into overlap.
Crash doors require enough clearance for the selected panel movement. Door width, approach direction, two-way traffic, nearby corners and the position of racks or workstations can affect whether the swing path is practical.
Difference 3: contact with traffic
With a strip curtain, traffic contacts flexible strips. The passage experience depends on strip thickness, overlap, temperature and the size and speed of the traffic.
With a crash door, traffic contacts a door panel or designated impact area. The door and hardware must be selected for the expected users and equipment. Do not assume that every traffic door is suitable for forklifts, pallet loads or high-speed impact.
Difference 4: barrier and environmental expectations
Overlapping PVC strips can help reduce uncontrolled air exchange, dust movement or insect entry, but they are not airtight. Actual performance depends on overlap, fit, material, traffic frequency, wind and installation.
Crash doors can create a more defined closed doorway, but they are not automatically airtight, insulated or weatherproof. Those properties depend on the specific door construction, seals, frame and verified test data.
Difference 5: maintenance and replacement
PVC strip curtain checks
- Clean strips using a method compatible with the material.
- Check for curling, cracking, clouding or excessive edge wear.
- Confirm that overlap remains even across the opening.
- Inspect hangers, plates and rail attachment.
- Replace individual worn strips when the hardware allows it.
Crash door checks
- Inspect panels and vision areas for damage.
- Check hinges, pivots and return action.
- Confirm bumpers and impact zones remain secure.
- Review frame attachment and swing clearance.
- Follow the door manufacturer’s maintenance instructions.
When PVC strip curtains may be the better fit
- The opening needs a flexible barrier across most of its width.
- Traffic approaches through different parts of a wide opening.
- Rigid swing clearance is limited.
- The buyer needs replaceable strips and configurable overlap.
- Visibility through clear strips is important.
- The operating temperature and traffic can be matched to a verified PVC grade and strip configuration.
When a crash door may be the better fit
- The site needs a clearly defined hinged passage.
- Traffic follows a predictable route through the doorway.
- There is safe clearance for the panels to swing and return.
- The selected door has verified hardware and impact suitability for the application.
- The operating team prefers a rigid panel system rather than contact with overlapping strips.
Can both systems be used together?
Some projects use more than one barrier type, but combining systems adds clearance, installation and maintenance requirements. Do not place a strip curtain and crash door together without checking the swing path, mounting positions, traffic visibility, cleaning access and emergency requirements.
A practical purchasing decision: compare the complete doorway
Ask suppliers to quote against the same opening, traffic profile and operating conditions. A curtain price and a hinged-door price are not comparable if one excludes mounting hardware, frame preparation or installation.
Step 1: rule out unsuitable layouts
Sketch the opening from above and mark racks, corners, handles and pedestrian routes. A hinged door needs a reviewed swing path. A strip curtain still needs unobstructed movement and a safe approach. Neither structure should be selected simply because the opening is described as high traffic.
Step 2: document contact and visibility
Record the largest loaded trolley or vehicle, projecting goods, approach direction and where opposing traffic becomes visible. Request the selected door supplier’s operating limits and hardware details. Clear strips or a vision panel do not, by themselves, make a mixed pedestrian-and-vehicle route safe.
Step 3: compare installed and maintained cost
- Product dimensions, strip arrangement or door-panel specification
- Rail, hinges, brackets, frame work and suitable fasteners
- Packaging, freight, installation labour and access equipment
- Cleaning access, replacement parts and maintenance labour
- Operational downtime during installation and future repairs
Keep unknown costs marked as unknown. Harbor Lux does not provide a universal cost or payback comparison for crash doors, and this guide is not a quotation for a hinged-door system.
Step 4: verify the environmental requirement
If temperature separation is important, compare material suitability, edge gaps, opening duration and traffic under the same conditions. If fire, hygiene or other regulated performance is required, obtain documentation for the specific configuration; a generic product description is not evidence of compliance.

Frequently asked questions
Are PVC strip curtains suitable for forklifts?
Some strip-curtain configurations may suit forklift or pallet traffic, but suitability depends on strip material, width, thickness, overlap, temperature, vehicle dimensions and passage frequency. Provide the loaded vehicle profile and doorway photos before selection.
Are crash doors always better for high traffic?
No. High traffic alone does not determine the answer. Approach path, impact type, swing clearance, traffic mix, barrier requirements and maintenance capacity all matter.
Which option saves more energy?
There is no universal percentage. Energy performance depends on the building, temperature difference, opening size, traffic, closure behavior, air movement and the tested properties of the selected system.
Can a strip curtain replace a crash door?
Sometimes a flexible strip barrier may satisfy the site’s task, but it does not duplicate the structure or verified performance of every crash door. Review safety, traffic, hygiene, environmental and operational requirements before replacing one system with another.
Which option costs less?
Compare the full installed and maintained configuration, not only the initial product price. Size, material, overlap, hardware, frame preparation, freight, installation, maintenance and replacement parts all affect cost.
Need help reviewing a doorway?
